Before the exam, lock the distinctions that quietly cost marks.

This page compresses the recurring relationships in Lesson 11 and Lessons 12-14 and focuses first on the points students can understand broadly yet still write imprecisely under exam conditions. Download a privacy-safe 7-page Score-Saver and a 6-page practice mock free.

Quick answer

The six distinctions to secure first

Before rereading the whole unit, make sure closely related terms are separated accurately enough to survive a short-answer or explanation question.

Recommended order:

Connect valence electrons → ion charge → ionic bonding → charge balance, then connect shell → subshell → orbital → filling rules → electron configuration.

When writing:

Do not stop at definitions. Build 2-4 sentences that show because → mechanism → result.

1

Valence electrons ≠ total electrons

Be able to connect group position, valence-electron pattern, likely ion charge and chemical behavior.

2

Electron transfer ≠ ionic bond

Electron transfer forms ions. The ionic bond is the attraction between the positive and negative ions produced.

3

Charge ≠ subscript

The 2+ in Mg²⁺ is an ionic charge; the 2 in MgCl₂ shows the ratio needed for charge balance.

4

Shell ≠ subshell ≠ orbital

Do not use the terms interchangeably. Know the hierarchy and a precise definition for each.

5

Aufbau ≠ Pauli ≠ Hund

Lowest energy first / maximum two per orbital / occupy equal-energy orbitals singly before pairing.

6

Full ≠ abbreviated configuration

Noble-gas notation shortens completed inner electrons; it does not change the electron count or filling logic.

Score-loss traps

Students often lose marks at the boundary between similar ideas.

These are the distinctions most likely to need precise wording or procedure based on the supplied Lesson 11 and Lesson 12-14 materials.

TRAP 01

“Atoms want to become ions.”

Avoid purposeful language. Write that atoms gain or lose electrons and may reach a more stable outer-shell arrangement.

TRAP 02

Describing NaCl as one molecule

Lesson 11 emphasizes that ionic compounds form large crystal lattices, not individual molecules.

TRAP 03

Using criss-cross without checking charge balance

The real rule is total positive charge = total negative charge. Confirm overall charge is zero.

TRAP 04

Forgetting the -ide ending

For a simple metal + nonmetal ionic compound: name the metal first and change the nonmetal ending to -ide.

TRAP 05

Putting three electrons in one orbital

The practical Pauli check is maximum two electrons in one orbital.

TRAP 06

Pairing too early

Hund's rule: equal-energy orbitals are occupied singly before electrons pair.

TRAP 07

Misreading the superscript

In an electron configuration, the superscript is the number of electrons in that subshell, not an ionic charge.

TRAP 08

Applying simple main-group logic to transition metals

Lesson 11 explicitly flags the transition-metal region as less straightforward in the simplified valence-electron model. Follow the model used in class.

Fast check: If you can define a term but cannot explain why it matters or what changes because of it, you are not ready for an explanation question yet.

Best use when time is short

Review less passively: check → write → repair.

The goal is to reveal whether learned content can actually be produced under exam conditions.

1. Score-Saver: 10-15 min

Read each high-risk point and ask, “Could I explain this without the page?”

2. Mock: 50 min

Complete it without notes so science understanding and English output are tested together.

3. Classify every lost mark

Label the cause as concept / terminology / reasoning / English expression, then rewrite only the weak answers.

FAQ

Common questions about Panyaden Y11 Science exam preparation

Short, direct answers for students and families.

Is this an official Panyaden resource?

No. It is an independent HAOLLA learning resource based on class materials supplied to HAOLLA. The latest school and teacher guidance takes priority.

What should I review first?

Start with valence electrons and ion charge, electron transfer versus ionic bond, charge balance, the shell-subshell-orbital hierarchy, the separate functions of Aufbau-Pauli-Hund, and full versus abbreviated electron configurations.

Why is the practice mock writing-focused?

Short scientific writing exposes both conceptual understanding and academic-English weaknesses such as subject-verb agreement, plural forms, causal connectors and precise scientific vocabulary.

Do the public PDFs contain student personal information?

No. The public editions remove the student name and exclude individual scores, errors and weakness records.

What if the exam is very close?

Secure the six high-risk distinctions in the Score-Saver, take the mock under time pressure, then rewrite only the answers that failed because of concept, terminology, reasoning or English expression.
