As the leader of our school club Care for Animals, I ①organizing a volunteer trip to an animal sanctuary for my club members. An animal sanctuary is a special place ②where rescued, injured, or abused animals can live in a safe and caring environment. All the club members and I ③agreed that the sanctuary would be the perfect place to learn about animal care. ④Excited for a new experience, we set out to volunteer.
July 29, Monday
Our club arrived at the Free Animals sanctuary. Jane, the staff member in charge of animal care, welcomed us with a big smile and gave us a tour of the facility. It was amazing to see bears and elephants moving freely in a large field. Our tasks for the day ⑤included cleaning the shelter and preparing food for the animals. While cleaning the habitats, we checked if there were any hazards that could harm the animals. Then, we helped prepare the food by cutting up fruits and vegetables and dividing them into several large baskets. For old elephants with weak teeth, we chopped bananas instead of the sugarcane that they usually eat.
Spending the whole day helping out with the animals was an incredible experience for me. It was a rewarding experience, and I was impressed with the attention the staff members gave to all the animals.

Today, we did something special for Ben and Lily. These two baby bears were rescued after they had been raised illegally in a tiny cage on a farm for many years. To help the bears restore their natural instincts, we carried out some special activities known as “behavioral enrichment.” For example, we made honey-log feeders for the bears. First, we made several holes in a log and filled them with honey. Then, we hung the honey-log feeders on trees near the bears’ habitat. As bears are intelligent and curious creatures, they can become bored and stressed when lacking mental and physical stimulation. The honey-log feeders stimulate their natural curiosity and keep them as active as they would be in the wild. After a while, Ben and Lily approached the feeders and started eating the honey inside. They are so cute!

This morning, we had the opportunity to learn about animal treatment thanks to Molly, an elderly elephant. After spending 25 years carrying tourists along rough roads, she developed a twisted spine and foot pain. In order to support Jane in taking care of Molly’s foot, we took part in positive reinforcement training, which involves using rewards to encourage desirable behaviors. When I gently touched her foot with a pole and called out, “foot,” she lifted it. We then rewarded her with a sweet piece of watermelon, her favorite fruit. This training helps reduce the stress that animals experience during controlled situations, such as treatment or a health examination. The good news is Molly seems to be adapting well, and I expect her to get better soon.
After (A) spending / spent 25 years carrying tourists, Molly developed pain. Positive reinforcement training (B) involves / involving using rewards, and it can reduce stress during (C) controlled / controlling situations. [3.0점]

On the last day, we were called to the rescue center due to a sudden emergency. Some dehydrated birds had fallen out of the sky in the city and were brought to the center. Following the veterinarian’s guidance, we provided water to the birds while the vets treated their broken wings and legs and injected them with vitamins for a speedy recovery. It was shocking that this type of accident happens every year since the high temperatures dry up water sources in the city. Caring for the birds, I couldn’t help but reflect on the impact of human activities on climate change and how it harms animals.
Saying goodbye to the animals and staff, I felt grateful for the opportunity to volunteer. From this experience, I learned the importance of treating animals with respect and care. I also came to realize that humans are just another kind of animal and share the Earth with all other living creatures. To improve animal welfare, I’ll work hard with Care for Animals members. Hopefully, I'll have the chance to volunteer at another sanctuary next summer.
Have you ever ①bought something online after ②seeing a message such as “Hurry! One item left!” even though you didn’t ③intend to buy it? Or have you ever felt rushed into ⑤making a purchase because of a limited-time offer? If you have, then you may have fallen prey to a dark pattern. Dark patterns are manipulative designs on websites and applications that ④tricks users into making unintended decisions. These deceptive practices often have consequences that cause financial damages to the users.
A widely used dark pattern is the practice of “forced continuity,” which requires users to pay a membership fee after a free trial ends. Companies deliberately avoid informing users about the end of the free trial period or make the cancellation process complicated. As a result, users have to pay membership fees even if they no longer want to use the service.
Another common type of dark pattern is known as “hidden fees.” This design suddenly adds extra fees at the last step of the ordering process. On the final page, consumers are surprised to discover additional charges, such as shipping or processing fees, which the seller has added to increase the final cost of the order.
“Confirm-shaming” is another online trick that users should be aware of. This technique manipulates users into feeling ashamed for cancelling their membership or requesting a refund for an order. Companies use this to keep their members subscribed, even if it goes against the members’ intentions. For example, when users want to cancel their subscription, they are offered two options: “I want to keep my benefits” and “I want to give up my benefits.” The first option is presented in an appealing way, while the second option seems like a bad choice.
Users should be (A) aware / awareness of confirm-shaming. The technique manipulates users into (B) feeling / feel ashamed, and the two cancellation options are (C) presented / presenting in emotionally unequal ways. [3.2점]
Dark patterns on digital platforms are ①become more complex and more prevalent. So, what is driving their growth? Over the years, online commerce ②has grown steadily, especially with the development of smart phones and other digital technologies. As the competition in online markets ③has intensified, companies ④have begun to develop sneakier strategies to trick people into making purchases. While these companies ⑤insist that they are simply using new types of marketing strategies, critics do not agree that dark patterns are valid marketing strategies. Rather, they suggest that a real marketing strategy create value for both companies and customers, promoting positive and supportive relationships.
Dark patterns, in contrast, not only manipulate customers to act against their intentions, but they can also lead to financial losses and personal data leaks. To tackle this problem, extensive research across various websites and applications is being conducted to document the prevalence of dark patterns and come up with solutions. In addition to research, governments are actively discussing on how to regulate these deceptive design patterns. The EU’s Digital Service Act, which banned dark patterns on online platforms in 2022, is a good example of such regulation in this area. Such regulations are expected to increase, limiting companies’ deceptive marketing practices in the digital market. However, regulations alone may not be sufficient. As individuals, we should take steps to combat dark patterns and be responsible for our online shopping behavior. This includes being cautious while making purchases, reading terms and conditions carefully, and recognizing that companies’ interests may not be the same as our own. Developing an awareness of dark patterns is also essential to avoid potential harm and economic loss. Ultimately, our attention and efforts will protect us from manipulation and enable us to make wise decisions in this digital age.
It wasn’t as though we didn’t know how overwhelmingly the army ①outnumbered us. But the strange thing was, it didn’t matter. Ever since the uprising began, I’d felt something ②coursing through me, as overwhelming as any army.
Conscience.
Conscience, the most terrifying thing in the world.
The day I stood shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of thousands of my fellow civilians, ④staring down the barrels of the soldiers’ guns, the day the bodies of those first two slaughtered ③were placed in a handcart and pushed at the head of the column, I was startled to discover an absence inside myself: the absence of fear. I remember feeling that it was all right to die. I felt the blood of a hundred thousand hearts surging together into one enormous artery, fresh and clean... the sublime enormity of a single heart, pulsing blood through that vessel and into my own. I dared to feel a part of it.
At one o’clock in the afternoon, while the speaker in front of the Provincial Office was playing the national anthem, the soldiers opened fire. I’d been standing in the middle of the column of the demonstrators, but when the bullets came flying, I turned and ran. That sublime feeling that I’d been tapping into, that enormous heart I’d felt briefly a part of, was smashed to pieces, strewn over the ground as so much rubbish. And the gunfire wasn’t only in the square: snipers were also positioned on the roofs of the surrounding buildings. Beside me and in front of me ⑤people crumples to the ground, but I kept on running. Only when I was sure I’d left the square far behind did I let myself stagger to a stop.
A small group had gathered in the street, and I heard them talking about raiding the police stations and reserves barracks to get guns. They were clearly made of much sterner stuff than I was. We’re sitting ducks like this. They’ll gun us down, the lot of us. Paratroopers even broke into the houses in my area. I was so scared I slept with a kitchen knife by my pillow. Shooting hundreds of rounds like that in broad daylight - I’m telling you, the world’s gone mad!
One of them jogged off to fetch his truck, and I stayed there slumped on the steps until he drove back. I thought about whether I really had it in me to carry a gun, to point it at a living person and pull the trigger.
It was already late at night by the time the truck I was riding in returned to the center. We’d twice taken a wrong turn, and when we’d got to the barracks we’d found that the guns had already been looted, so it turned out to be a wasted trip. In the meantime, I had no way of knowing how many had fallen in the street fighting. All I remember is the entrance to the hospital the following morning, the seemingly never-ending line of people queuing up to give blood: the doctors and nurses striding through the blasted streets, white gowns bloodstained, hands gripping stretchers; the women who handed up stale rice balls, water and strawberries to the truck I was riding in; the strains of the national anthem and ‘Arirang,’ which everyone was singing at the top of their voice.
A. The narrator sees people waiting to donate blood. B. The group finds the barracks already looted. C. A man leaves to fetch a truck. D. The narrator wonders whether he could shoot a living person. [2.6점]
The decisive factor dominating the morality of the crowd has not yet been clearly identified. One point of interest is the emergence in situ of a particular ethical fluctuation separate from the moral standard of the individuals who constitute the crowd. Certain crowds do not blench at the prospect of looting, murder and rape, while on the other hand, others display a level of courage and altruism which those making up that same crowd would have had difficulty in achieving as individuals. The author argues that, rather than this latter type of crowd being made up of especially noble individuals, that nobility which is a fundamental human attribute is able to manifest itself through borrowing strength from the crowd; also, similarly, that the former case is one in which humanity’s essential barbarism is exacerbated not by the especially barbaric nature of any of the individuals involved, but through that magnification which occurs naturally in crowds.
The censors had scored through four lines in the paragraph following that one. Bearing that in mind, the question which remains to us is this: what is humanity? What do we have to do to keep humanity as one thing and not another? Eun-sook could remember the precise thickness of the line that had been drawn through these sentences. She could recall the translator’s fleshy neck, his shabby navy sweater, his sallow complexion; his long, blackened fingernails constantly fumbling with the glass of water. But she still couldn’t picture his face to herself with any precision.
The fountain had been dry that afternoon. Gun-toting soldiers were hauling fresh bodies over the wall in front of the Provincial Office. They dragged them by the legs, so that the backs of their heads bumped and scraped against the ground, then tossed them next to the bodies that had already been dumped there. Some of the soldiers had had a bright idea for increasing efficiency of this process: a small group was marching into the Provincial Office’s inner yard, each holding a corner or edge of a huge waterproof tarp on which the corpses of a dozen people were being transported in one go. When Eun-sook had walked by, unable to prevent her eyes from widening at the sight, three soldiers rushed over and aimed their guns at her chest. Where are you going? Just home. I’ve been visiting my aunt, she’s not well. Her voice had been cool and steady, but her upper lip trembled as she spoke.
She left the square on their orders, making an effort to regulate her steps. When she reached Daein Market, a huge tank came roaring down the main road. They want to show everyone that it’s all over, she’d thought to herself, almost absentmindedly. That all the protesters have been killed.
The neighborhood where she lived with her parents, though close to the university district, was so utterly devoid of human life, it was as though a plague had ravaged it. When she rang the bell, her father instantly came running out, only unlocking the main gate for the brief time it took to usher her inside. He got her to hide up in the kitchen loft, then moved the tall cupboard over beneath the entrance so that it wouldn’t attract anyone’s notice. As morning wore into the afternoon, the heavy tread of combat boots started to be heard. Sounds of doors being slid open, of struggling bodies being dragged, of something being smashed. Sounds of begging and pleading.
When she finally came down from the loft the next evening, her mother informed her that the corpses had been loaded into the city garbage trucks and driven off to a mass grave. Not just those that have been dumped in front of the fountain; even the unidentified bodies, the ones that had been kept in coffins in the gymnasium - all have been taken away.
The government and municipal offices had reopened, as had the schools. The shops had their shutters back up and had resumed the trading. Since martial law was still in effect, no one was permitted to be out in the streets after 7 p.m. Soldiers also set up checkpoints arbitrarily throughout the day, and anyone who had come out without their ID Card was hauled off to the nearest police station.
In order to make up for the class time that had been missed, the majority of schools extended their summer term into early August. Until the day when they closed for the summer holidays, she called the Provincial Office’s Public Inquiry Department every single day, from the booth next to the bus stop. It’s not right for the fountain to be on, for God’s sake, make it stop.
The neighborhood, though (A) close / closely to the university district, was nearly empty. Her father opened the gate only for the brief time it (B) took / taken to usher her inside. Anyone who had come out without an ID card (C) was / were hauled off. [2.4점]
There were soldiers who were especially cruel. When I first started poring over the documents, what had proved the most incomprehensible was that this bloodshed had been committed again and again, and with no attempt to bring the perpetrators before the authorities. Acts of violence committed in broad daylight, without hesitation and without regret. Commanding officers who would have encouraged, no, even demanded such displays of brutality.
Just as there were some soldiers who were especially cruel, so there were others who were especially non-aggressive. There were paratroopers who carried the wounded on their backs all the way to the hospital and set them down on the steps before hastening back to their posts. There were soldiers who, when the order was given to fire on the crowd, pointed the barrels of their guns up into the air so they wouldn’t hit anyone. When the soldiers formed the wall in front of the corpses lined up outside the Provincial Office, blocking them from the view of the foreign news cameras, and gave a rousing chorus of an army song, there was one of their number who kept his mouth conspicuously shut.
Even the civil militia, the ones who stayed behind in the Provincial Office, displayed an attitude that wasn’t dissimilar. The majority of them were willing to carry guns but, when push came to shove, couldn’t actually bring themselves to fire them. When asked why they stayed behind when they knew they were staring defeat in the face, the surviving witnesses all gave the same answer: I’m not sure. It just seemed like something we had to do.
Just as there (A) were / was some soldiers who were especially cruel, there were others who behaved differently. There were paratroopers who (B) carried / carrying the wounded, and soldiers who, when the order (C) was given / gave to fire, pointed their guns into the air. [3.1점]
When I think of those ten days in the life of that city, I think of the moment when a man who’d been lynched, almost killed, found the strength to open his eyes. The moment when, spitting out fragments of teeth along with the mouthful of blood, he held his failing eyes open with his fingers so he could look his attacker straight in the face. The moment when he appeared to remember that he had a face and a voice, to recollect his own dignity, which seemed the memory of a previous life. Break open that moment and out of it will come massacre, torture, violent repression. It gets shoved aside, beaten to a pulp, swept away in the tide of brutality. But now, if we can only keep our eyes open, if we can all hold our gazes steadily, until the bitter end ...
We are wonderfully made, yet we don’t allow ourselves to participate in the wonder for which we were created. Instead of moving anywhere and everywhere, most of us spend our time moving nowhere. We occupy the same square footage of a chair for hours and hours every day. Many kids today are being held captive by ‘smart’ devices like phones and tablets. They are not going outside to play, they are not learning how to socialize and read physical cues from others. As a result they are not learning or building their movement repertoire, the very thing that will help them learn, communicate, create, and become emotionally mature. They are not even learning how to run, how to skip, or how to climb. Instead, they are learning how to live with anxiety, depression, and even diseases they were never meant to have. The point is we are getting further and further away from our design. We were made to move — and through movement, we are meant to live extraordinary lives. Movement is life to us.
